Dechman is the CEO and co-founder of the wealth administration agency Summit Rock Advisors, and a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art, where he is Chair of their Photography Committee. He is a previous trustee of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Along with his associate Michel Mercure, he collects early modernism, and likewise later artists including Cindy Sherman, Lee Friedlander, Harry Callahan, Bill Brandt, and Robert Frank. Dechman has loaned and gifted works to MoMA and other museums on a number of occasions, and sponsors the annual David A. Dechman Photography Award. In 2014, the pair announced plans to make a major donation of pictures to the Whitney Museum, lots of which had been included in the latest inaugural exhibition (see Unprecedented Gift to Whitney Museum’s Photo Collection). As the listing beneath reveals, the world’s top pictures collectors can’t be pinned down.

Earliest recognized surviving heliographic engraving, 1825, printed from a metallic plate made by Nicéphore Niépce. The plate was exposed under an ordinary engraving and copied it by photographic means. This was a step in path of the first everlasting photograph taken with a camera.
